The Quad: Big East Memories: When the Huskies Were Pups

Writers who covered the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden share their favorite memories.

As the Big East worked its way toward Big Town, I watched one loyal family go through torture. Esther Newberg, my friend and literary agent, and her family from Connecticut would join a tiny band of University of Connecticut fans at the Big East tournament. Let the record show that UConn won its first tournament game in 1980, then lost seven straight.

It was no fun for them to join a tiny knot of fans at the pathetic little opener, and then trudge out into the dank March weather before the Ewings and Mullins of the world had even warmed up. But Esther's family had hope.

In 1986, Connecticut hired Jim Calhoun, a former American International player, away from Northeastern. He actually won a tournament game in 1988, and by 1999, he won the first of three national championships. I know there are penalties from recruiting standards and issues with Calhoun's bluster, but I liked him because he never forgot he was a bootstrapper, and often praised scrappy opponents like Eastern Michigan, when they made the most of what they had.

I e-mailed Esther to see what she remembered about the bad old days of the Big East tournaments in B.C. — Before Calhoun. She replied, "WAS there even a BEFORE Calhoun?"
