Goal: Roy Miller and the Red Bulls’ Late Show

A week after a thrilling season-opening tie against the Timbers in Portland, the Red Bulls returned to the West Coast on Sunday night and produced something decidedly less memorable.

The game did follow the same script as the opener: the Red Bulls took the lead in the first half, frustrating their opponent, only to crumble in the second half and kick it away. Last week's game ended 3-3. On Sunday, the Red Bulls managed to give away both the lead and all the points, losing, 2-1, on late goals by Adam Jahn and — in what was surely the night's biggest talking point — Chris Wondolowski, on a second-chance penalty kick two minutes into added time.

And there is no way to sugarcoat it: the final 10 minutes were a disaster of epic proportions for Red Bulls defender Roy Miller.

Miller's troubles began in the 83rd minute, when he let Jahn get behind him and stab home a cross from Sam Cronin to tie the score.

Miller then made things worse in the 90th minute, when he was penalized by the referee, Ricardo Salazar, for handling a header by Jahn in the penalty area.

Goalkeeper Luis Robles bailed out Miller by saving Wondolowski's penalty kick, but Miller wasn't done. He drew another whistle from Salazar for encroachment on Wondolowski's attempt, giving Wondolowski — who tied the M.L.S. single-season scoring record last season — a second chance.

And of course you know what happened after that.

Oh, Roy.
