LANDOVER, Md. — After one quarter Sunday night against the Washington Redskins, the Giants had played some of their worst football of the year. And it is hard for ineptitude to stand out in a season that began with six successive losses.

Early in the second quarter, the Giants were trailing by two touchdowns. The team's offense had accumulated 5 yards on its first six plays. The defense looked disorganized, even overwhelmed.

And then, everything changed. The offense moved the ball and the defense rose up to halt the Redskins. The Giants charged back to tie the game by halftime. When they fell behind again in the third quarter, their response was to surge back yet again.

The result was the Giants' fifth victory in their last six games, a 24-17 defeat of Washington in an uneven but conclusive game. The Redskins (3-9) are no doubt a substandard team, but the Giants, losing by 14 points on the road, nonetheless rallied to an improbable victory.

"What I'm most proud of is the way we hung in there at the beginning when things weren't going our way," Giants Coach Tom Coughlin said. "It was too early to be too worried but we did need to settle down a little bit."

Giants defensive end Justin Tuck felt more urgency than his coach.

"At 14-0, we kind of had to do something drastic to stop the bleeding," Tuck, who had a career-high four sacks, said. "We caught our breath, weathered the storm and things turned around."

The result keeps alive the Giants' exceedingly tenuous playoff hopes. It also means the Giants (5-7) can still finish the season with a winning record.

The Giants' winning drive began after defensive end Damontre Moore deflected a Washington punt and the Giants took over near midfield. Consecutive passes from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz and Brandon Myers put the Giants on the Redskins' 20-yard line.

A completion to Cruz brought the Giants to the 1-yard line, where running back Andre Brown bulled in for a 21-17 Giants lead.

Washington tried to rally, but the Giants' defensive front four, which had begun the game meekly, was harassing quarterback Robert Griffin III. Tuck had two sacks on one Redskins possession and three in the fourth quarter.

"Justin has been close to a lot of sacks this year," Coughlin said. "He hasn't had the numbers, but he has just kept coming."

The Giants added a 39-yard field goal by Josh Brown in the final minutes. Washington, after starting the game with so much offensive firepower, had just two first downs and no points in the final quarter.

It had been an altogether different Washington team in the opening minutes, when the Redskins came out in a no-huddle offense. The Giants' defense responded as if it had never seen that tactic. The Giants looked bewildered and abortively tried to shuffle in various player groups. The Redskins sliced through the disorderly Giants, taking advantage especially of the reworked secondary, which was not coming close to covering any of the Washington receivers.

On the Redskins' first play, Griffin waited in the pocket until running back Alfred Morris wandered unattended over the middle, where he caught a pass for a 12-yard gain.

Varying the run and pass, Washington gobbled up ground. When the Giants did make a stand on a third-and-6 near midfield, Griffin picked up the first down with a quarterback sneak on fourth down. On another third down, Griffin, who was 5 for 5 in the opening drive, threw to tight end Fred Davis for 12 yards. Davis was wide open on the play, and Griffin, as was the case throughout the drive, had all day in the passing pocket.

Morris put Washington ahead by 7-0 with a 1-yard run. The Redskins' 14-play opening drive took 7 minutes 6 seconds.

The Giants' first two possessions ended after three plays as they could not run the ball effectively or find their rhythm in the passing game. Manning was sacked the first time he dropped back to pass, going down shortly after he planted his right foot and prepared to throw as Washington's Brian Orakpo blew past Giants right tackle Will Beatty.
