Infielder Nick Punto agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract with the Oakland Athletics after a little more than a season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Punto, 36, hit .255 last season with two home runs in 116 games.
■ Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia had surgery on his left thumb. The operation to repair the ulnar collateral ligament was performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan in Scottsdale, Ariz. The team said it was a success. Pedroia hurt his hand diving into first base on opening day and played the rest of the season with the injury.
