Defending champion Bayern Munich produced a powerful display to outclass host Manchester City, 3-1, in the UEFA Champions League.
Dominant in all facets of the game, Munich took a 1-0 halftime lead after City goalkeeper Joe Hart let Franck Ribéry's shot slip through his grasp. Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben added goals in a four-minute span. Also in Group D, host CSKA Moscow came from behind to beat Viktoria Plzen, 3-2.
In Group A, host Shakhtar Donetsk scored a late equalizer to hold Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in a tense game. In Germany, Jens Hegeler scored on a free kick in the second minute of injury time to give host Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad.
In Group B, the new coach Roberto Mancini steered Galatasaray to a 2-2 draw at Juventus. And Cristiano Ronaldo continued his sparkling form with two goals in a 4-0 victory for host Real Madrid against Copenhagen.
In Group C, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice as Paris St.-Germain eased to a 3-0 win against visiting Benfica, and Kostas Mitroglou had a hat trick to lead Olympiakos to a 3-0 victory at Anderlecht.
