Bats: Harvey Apologizes for Awkward Interview

This season, at 24, Matt Harvey proved he was among the best pitchers in the game. But perhaps he still must learn the finer points of being a star, and how to act in the spotlight, as evidenced Wednesday, when his radio appearance with Dan Patrick turned awkward.

The interview came a day after Harvey announced that he had chosen to rehabilitate the partly torn ligament in his elbow, instead of having Tommy John surgery. The decision made headlines, but Harvey apparently thought the interview with Patrick would focus on his pitching the telecommunications company Qualcomm.

Traditionally, when athletes appear on a radio show to pitch something — be it a product, charity effort or company — they give an interview, answering relevant questions, and then are allotted time to pitch whatever they want.

Harvey's interview started just fine, with Patrick asking two light questions about Harvey's background in football. Then Patrick asked Harvey to describe his injury, and Harvey discussed the "slight tear" of his ulnar collateral ligament, and how Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist, had found the ligament to be stable.

Harvey then said: "We chose to go the route of rehabbing. I strongly believe that that's going to work and pay off. But today I'm here talking about Qualcomm, hoping at least I can help them out as much as possible."

Patrick seemed unfazed. He said he'd let Harvey get his pitch in later and tried to divert the subject back to Harvey's elbow, asking about Tommy John surgery.

Harvey answered the question, and when Patrick asked a follow-up question, he started to answer again. But then mid-answer, Harvey apparently decided that was enough and said: "I did all those answers yesterday, and maybe at the appropriate time, we can talk a little bit more about that. Obviously, today is about Qualcomm."

Patrick then calmly asked if Harvey did not want to talk about his decision to rehab, and Harvey suggested perhaps they set up another call for that, adding, "Today we're honoring and supporting Qualcomm."

At that point, Patrick, sounding defeated or perhaps just tired, allowed Harvey to go ahead with his pitch. Harvey spoke for about 90 seconds about Qualcomm, and the interview ended. Harvey hung up the phone, and Patrick took a deep breath.

Harvey later apologized on Twitter, "I've had a few rough outings on the mound, that was a rough outing on the radio this morning."

He continued: "Been an exhausting couple of days. Apologies to @DanPatrick and @Qualcomm."
