MASON, Ohio — The sudden retirement of the recent Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli on Wednesday night was the talk of the Western & Southern Open the next day, with players from both tours expressing shock at her departure. Below, a look at some players' reactions:
SERENA WILLIAMS: "Marion Bartoli is such a great fighter, and she has a great attitude. I remember the first time I saw her, I was actually in Paris for the Paris Indoor Championships. It was a long, long, long time ago, probably in like the early 2000s, and I just remember her being so young and working so hard. And that was her whole career. It just shows you how much and how far you can go by working so hard. She's had a great career by winning Wimbledon as well. It doesn't get better than that."
ANDY MURRAY: "Well, I mean, in some ways, it's surprising. But I did say in here the other day that — I wasn't meaning any disrespect for it. I was saying it in the most positive way — I think the biggest compliment you can pay an athlete is they've reached their potential, and I believe she did that. She worked exceptionally hard to get to where she's got to. She deserved to win a Grand Slam, and maybe it was the right time for her to stop because of how hard she needed to work. But it was obviously surprising because you don't see it that often in sport where people kind of finish almost on the top, in a way. But I'm sure she'll enjoy her life. It's nice to finish your career as Wimbledon champion, that's for sure."
VICTORIA AZARENKA: "I think everybody's a little bit surprised about that. I think, you know, whatever makes her happy. Everybody has to respect that because it's Marion's life, her career. I think it's very brave to do that. I think she was chasing her dream for such a long time. When she got it, it felt good. So whatever makes her happy. She's a great competitor. Always been great on the tour. I wish her all the best in whatever she's going to do next. I think she's a very different player from everybody else. I have to give her a lot of credit for making so much of her career. And it's been a pleasure to play against her. She's a very challenging opponent. We're all going to remember her as a Wimbledon champion, so I think that's good memories to have."
RAFAEL NADAL: "Yeah, I read today in the morning and was a big surprise. But she feels that it's the moment, so the only thing that we can say is congratulations for all the career that she had. That was amazing, and finished her career with a Grand Slam title, a Wimbledon one, a few months ago is just great. Wish her all the best for the rest of her life and big success in the new projects that probably she will have."
LI NA: "I think I was the latest one yesterday. So I'm not sure if I was the first to know the news, but when I heard the news, I was feeling a little bit shocked because, I mean, just one half month ago she just won Wimbledon. She should have a lot of confidence to win more titles. But at the same time, I can understand what happened, because of course you've got a lot of pressure."
ROGER FEDERER: "Well, I only heard this morning actually. Some random player asked me if I heard about it, and I didn't hear about it. I think it's great for her. Everybody who announces their retirement should be very happy and proud of what they achieved, you know. It comes clearly at a time when maybe you wouldn't expect her to do so because she could take advantage of her rankings and it maybe filled her with motivation, but it actually maybe just pointed out that she's down either physically, mentally, whatever it is. When somebody makes that decision, I think you can only be happy for that person, not sad. Clearly for fans of hers they're disappointed, but I think it's always you look back at a long and tough and grueling career, and I think she can do that, too. She had a great work ethic, and for that reason, I congratulate her for taking the difficult step to retire."
JOHN ISNER: "Well, yeah, it was unexpected, I think, for everybody — especially me. You know, after Wimbledon, she's coming here, and you wouldn't expect her to retire at this tournament. Maybe next year's Wimbledon, or something, I don't know what it is. But I guess she knows her body better than anyone else, and if she says she's in a lot of pain playing every time she takes the court, maybe she just doesn't want to deal with that anymore. So more power to her. She had a great career and capped it off on a very high note. I'm not talking about losing here, I'm talking about winning Wimbledon. Not many people can call themselves a Grand Slam champion, but she can."
SLOANE STEPHENS: "Shock. But I think it's a personal decision. She knows what's best for her. So I wish her all the best. Hopefully, whatever she does, she loves it to death and has a good life."
