Manuel Torres scored twice to lead Panama to a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the first round of the Concacaf Gold Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Torres gave Panama a 1-0 lead with a penalty kick in the seventh minute, but his second goal broke a 1-1 tie and stunned a pro-Mexico crowd of 56,822.

Marco Fabian scored for Mexico two minutes into stoppage time of the first half. Mexico was thought to be a heavy favorite among Group A teams, but it struggled to resemble a team in search of its third consecutive Gold Cup title.

Fabrice Reuperne scored with less than a minute left in stoppage time to lift Martinique to a 1-0 victory over Canada in another opening-round game.

■ Ebenezer Assifuah's second goal, in the closing minutes of extra time, helped Ghana beat Chile, 4-3, to reach the semifinals of the Under-20 World Cup in Istanbul.

The only African nation to win the event, in 2009, Ghana will next play France while Iraq takes on Uruguay in the other semifinal. Earlier Sunday, Iraq lost the lead three times to tie South Korea, 3-3, before winning a penalty shootout. (AP)
