Slap Shot

If it happens on ice and it involves hitting and scoring, The Times's Slap Shot blog is on it.

Frans Nielsen scored the go-ahead goal and Kevin Poulin made 23 saves for his first win of the season and the host Islanders defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 5-2.

With the victory, the Islanders moved past the idle Rangers into the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

¶ The Dallas Stars shipped the 41-year-old Jaromir Jagr, a five-time scoring champion, to Boston in the biggest trade a day before the N.H.L. deadline. The trade gives the Bruins some needed offensive punch for the postseason, which starts April 30.  ¶ Nathan Horton broke a tie midway through the third period with his fourth goal in four games and the host Boston Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators, 3-2, with an aggressive attack that produced a season-high 50 shots.
