Before everyone moves on to Matchday 2 of the Champions League quarterfinals and begins worrying about what Barcelona's 2-2 tie at Paris St.-Germain and Lionel Messi's hamstring injury will mean for next week's second leg, let's take a moment to properly honor the gorgeous ball that Dani Alves sliced into Messi's path for the Catalans' opening goal.
Messi has scored plenty of goals, and he will score plenty more, but it may be some time before we see a pass like this one again.
It was not so much an assist as it was a piece of art, an Anish Kapoor sculpture of a pass, with the elegant curve of a roadster's fender and the hard right turn of a duffer's pitching wedge. And he had done it on purpose: one touch to control the ball coming at him and then — facing the left touchline — an upward slash of his right leg that wouldn't have been out of place in a Rockettes kick line.
The contact with the outside of Alves's right foot was so perfect that the ball — landing on a dime 20 yards away — sat up so beautifully on its one bounce that Messi didn't even need to touch it before slamming it into the net.
Sublime is an overused word, but sometimes it fits. Here are a few others: Majestic. Extraordinary. Exquisite. The Telegraph described the pass as both "incredible" and "ludicrous." The staid BBC deemed it "delicious."
And at halftime of The Guardian's live blog, John Ashdown called it "a pass so good I'd like to take it down the pub and buy it a pint. You know, just as friends."

Personally, I'd like to think that Messi's hamstring was so overcome with emotion at the sight of the pass curling its way toward him that it couldn't go on.
