CLEVELAND — Ivan Nova was looking forward to getting back on the mound Wednesday to help erase the memory of a poor outing in his last game, on Friday, but rain washed away the chance.
The game between the Yankees and the Cleveland Indians was rained out Wednesday night, and Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said he would now skip Nova, moving him to the bullpen until his turn comes around again next week.
Phil Hughes, who was already set to pitch Thursday, will remain the scheduled starter for the Yankees against the Indians' Zach McCalister. Hughes had a stomach ailment on Wednesday afternoon, but Girardi said Hughes was feeling better after the rainout and should be able to make Thursday's start, weather permitting.
The forecast for Thursday, however, does not appear to be much better than Wednesday's.
Nova was disappointed to be skipped in the rotation, but he accepted it.
"I feel really good with my day to pitch coming, and all I want to do is go out and pitch," he said after hearing the news that he would be skipped. "Now I have to wait five more days. I want to be on the mound every five days but I can't control nothing so, like I said, I have to get ready for when they tell me to pitch."
Nova gave up four runs in four and two-thirds innings in Detroit on Friday. Last year, he was bounced from the rotation in the postseason after going 12-8 with a 5.02 earned run average.
