Goalkeeper Tim Howard has two broken bones in his back, his English club, Everton, announced Friday, an injury that will almost certainly rule him out of two important World Cup qualifiers for the United States national team later this month.
Everton revealed no timetable for his recovery, saying only that the injury, sustained in an F.A. Cup game Feb. 26, was not expected to end his season.
"He has two fractures, but they are not bones that are supporting anything," Everton Manager David Moyes said. "It is off the spine. They are not weight-bearing."
That news will be of little comfort to United States Coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who could use a healthy Howard more than ever. The Americans lost their first game in the final round of regional qualifying, by 2-1 at Honduras on Feb. 6. They face a challenging game against Costa Rica at Commerce City, Colo., on March 22 before an even more daunting task: a game against Mexico at the Azteca in Mexico City four days later.
An 0-3 start would seriously endanger the Americans' hopes of reaching the World Cup in Brazil next year.
Howard's injury complicates Klinsmann's growing defensive concerns. The Americans' young central-defense pairing of Omar Gonzalez and Geoff Cameron turned in a disappointing showing in front of Howard at Honduras, but another shuffle by Klinsmann could be difficult. A host of American defenders are injured (Steve Cherundolo, Edgar Castillo), sitting on the bench for their clubs (Carlos Bocanegra, Eric Lichaj, Oguchi Onyewu), or just getting into playing form a week into the Major League Soccer season (Matt Besler, George John).
At least one change has been forced upon Klinsmann. Brad Guzan, who is enjoying a breakout season at Aston Villa, is the likeliest choice to fill Howard's place in goal. Guzan has spent years as Howard's backup, and he is the last American other than Howard to start a World Cup qualifier. That game, though, was in March 2009, a 2-2 tie at El Salvador.
