Bats: Yankees Confirm Pursuit of Derrek Lee and Reach Out to Chipper Jones

TAMPA, Fla. – With his sagging ship of a team listing in uncertain waters, General Manager Brian Cashman sent an S O S to an iconic Atlanta Braves player Monday.

Sitting in the dugout before the Yankees' exhibition game with the St. Louis Cardinals, Cashman confirmed to three reporters that he asked Derrek Lee to come out of retirement, and then said he would be just as happy to sign Chipper Jones, who retired last year after 19 years with the Braves.

But Cashman said he did not have a working telephone number for Jones's agent, B.B. Abbott. So he told the reporters they could report his interest through Twitter as a way of letting Jones know, even though Cashman said he was almost 100 percent certain Jones would turn him down.

"Get it out there," Cashman said. "I would sign him in a heartbeat. He can play third base, first base, D.H. He would be perfect."

But Jones said on Twitter that he was enjoying his retirement:

Enough with the rumors! While I am flattered about the speculation of being enticed out of retirement, I'm happy with life as a bad golfer!

Lee would also be an excellent fit, Cashman said, calling him a "Yankee type of player." He said Lee was intrigued by his offer, but there was no deal yet and Cashman was not optimistic.

Because of the wrist injury to the regular first baseman Mark Teixeira, the Yankees are desperately in search of a replacement either at first base or third. Jones made his retirement official after last year, and Lee has not played since 2011, underscoring the slim options available to the Yankees.

"I would say it's more a case of us being creative," Cashman said.

He also reached out to the agents for Scott Rolen, who is also unsigned. But Cashman sounded even less optimistic that Rolen would be a fit for the Yankees, hinting that he has minimum requirements about playing time and money and would not match up with their needs.

As for Jones, he played his entire career in Atlanta and has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of coming back. If he did join the Yankees it would be a shock to the Braves and all of Georgia. It is unlikely he would do anything to damage his standing in that community.

Internally, the Yankees are looking at Juan Rivera at first base and Ronnier Mustelier at third, which would shift Kevin Youkilis to first base.
