Goal: Why Always Him? Balotelli Scores Twice in Milan Debut

Mario Balotelli made a dramatic return to Italy on Sunday by scoring two goals for A.C. Milan in its 2-1 victory over Udinese.

Three days after joining Milan in a transfer deadline move, and after nearly scoring in the game's first minute, when he whistled a shot past the post, Balotelli connected in the 25th — hammering home a sharp cross from Stephen El Shaarawy in the goal mouth. He celebrated by standing in place with his arms outstretched, not-to-subtly announcing his arrival to the crowd at the San Siro.

Balotelli also scored the winner, converting a controversial penalty kick four minutes into injury time after a foul on El Shaarawy.

"I'm very happy despite the fact I'm just getting over what has been a difficult period," Balotelli told Sky Sports of his recent transfer from Manchester City. "I didn't play a lot and I could feel it in my legs. But tonight I was relaxed and I was ready."

In typically understated Italian fashion, Milan's president, Adriano Galliani, who orchestrated Balotelli's transfer last week — whatever was behind it — said it was "fate" that the striker scored in his first match for the club. He even compared him with Lionel Messi, Barcelona's four-time world player of the year.

"We don't have Messi but we have Balotelli," Galliani added. "This attack reminds me of Barcelona and we will see the benefit in terms of sponsors because he is only 22 and he has great potential."

The win was especially tasty for Milan's fans because it pulled the Rossoneri even on points with Balotelli's old club, Inter, in fourth place. Inter lost at Siena, 3-1.

"Playing for Milan was my dream and I'll do everything possible to win in the face of those who thought I wasn't worthy of Milan," Balotelli told reporters.

They will all be sure to point out that Balotelli grew up rooting for Milan, not Inter, which gave him his Serie A debut in 2007. Because what's Balotelli without a little bit of controversy?
