The United States men's national team played its first match of 2013, stumbling to a 0-0 draw against Canada on Wednesday night in Houston.
There were few positive reviews of the game or the guys in the blue U.S. jerseys.
The Goal blog's player ratings are here, and for this year (and through the World Cup), Castrol has been added as a sponsor for the national team and will be providing its ratings index (as it did last season in Major League Soccer).
In a nutshell, the Castrol Index tracks every move on the field and assesses whether it has a positive or negative effect on a team's ability to score or concede a goal.
A key factor is in which zone on the field the action takes place. Players receive points for each successful pass they complete, but the number of points awarded depends on which zones the ball is passed from and received in. Misplaced or intercepted passes are penalized depending on how much trouble the mistake is likely to land the team in. The index is generated from data accumulated by Opta, which logs about 1,800 player movements each game. The data are analyzed, and each player is awarded a point total, the higher the better.
You can find a video explaining the index here.
According to the Castrol Index:
¶ The three U.S. defenders (Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez and Justin Morrow), all of whom played 90 minutes, had the three highest ratings. Not really a surprise since Canada had only one shot.
¶ Besler was the top-rated U.S. player.
¶ Brad Evans was the top-rated midfielder, though he was the only midfielder to play the full game.
¶ Substitutes like Juan Agudelo and Will Bruin had the lowest ratings.
