During a pregame meal, at halftime and down the stretch, St. John's Coach Steve Lavin emphasized rebounding.
The Red Storm responded Saturday, outrebounding No. 14 Cincinnati, 40-34, en route to a 53-52 upset and their first Big East victory of the season.
The host Bearcats (13-2, 1-1) began the day second in the nation in rebounding, with 45.3 per game, but St. John's (9-5, 1-1) was the more physical team.
Four of the previous five games between the teams had been decided by 2 points. After St. John's built a 12-point lead early in the second half, it looked as if that trend would end. But Cincinnati fought back, taking a 52-51 lead in the final minute.
The Red Storm regained the lead when D'Angelo Harrison hit a jumper with 29 seconds left. Harrison finished with 15 points.
ILLINOIS 74, OHIO STATE 55 Brandon Paul scored 19 points, helping No. 11 Illinois (14-2, 1-1) bounce back from a tough loss in its Big Ten opener to beat No. 8 Ohio State (11-3, 1-1) at home.
MARQUETTE 49, GEORGETOWN 48 Georgetown forward Greg Whittington missed a free throw that would have tied the score with 2.3 seconds left, and host Marquette (11-3, 2-0 Big East) held off No. 15 Georgetown (10-2, 0-1).
RUTGERS 67, PITT 62 Eli Carter scored 23 points off the bench, and host Rutgers (10-3, 1-1 Big East) held off a second-half rally by No. 24 Pittsburgh (12-3, 0-2).
Rutgers Coach Mike Rice earned his first win since returning from a three-game suspension for inappropriate behavior.
DUKE 80, WAKE FOREST 62 Ryan Kelly scored a season-high 22 points, his fourth straight 20-point game against Wake Forest, as No. 1 Duke (14-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) routed the visiting Demon Deacons (7-6, 0-1).
ARIZONA 60, UTAH 57 Mark Lyons hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds left, and No. 3 Arizona (14-0, 2-0 Pacific-12) edged Utah (8-6, 0-2) at home.
GONZAGA 81, SANTA CLARA 74 Kelly Olynyk's 33 points helped No. 10 Gonzaga (15-1, 2-0 West Coast Conference) hold off host Santa Clara (12-4, 1-1).
MISSOURI 66, BUCKNELL 64 Phil Pressey scored 26 points, helping No. 12 Missouri (11-2) get by Bucknell (13-3) at home.
CREIGHTON 79, INDIANA STATE 66 Led by Doug McDermott's 25 points, No. 16 Creighton (14-1, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) beat visiting Indiana State (9-5, 2-1).
BUTLER 57, NEW ORLEANS 44 Kellen Dunham scored 15 points and Khyle Marshall added 13, helping No. 17 Butler (12-2) beat New Orleans (3-10) despite struggling at home.
MICHIGAN STATE 84, PURDUE 61 The freshman Gary Harris scored 22 points, and No. 18 Michigan State (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) routed visiting Purdue (7-7, 1-1).
NOTRE DAME 93, SETON HALL 74 Scott Martin had 22 points, leading No. 21 Notre Dame (13-1, 1-0 Big East) past visiting Seton Hall (12-3, 1-1).
KANSAS ST. 73, OKLAHOMA ST. 67 Led by Rodney McGruder's 28 points, No. 25 Kansas State (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) held off No. 22 Oklahoma State (10-3, 0-1) at home.
N.C. STATE 78, B.C. 73 Scott Wood had 12 points in the second half, helping No. 23 North Carolina State (12-2, 1-0 A.C.C.) beat host Boston College (8-6, 0-1).
