Tottenham conceded two goals in the last 10 minutes and was ousted in the League Cup quarterfinals by West Ham, 2-1. It was Spurs' first match since André Villas-Boas was dismissed as manager on Monday.

Manchester United also advanced with a 2-0 win at Stoke on goals by Ashley Young and Patrice Evra. The match was interrupted in the 29th minute because of hail.

■ A Brazilian labor court allowed construction to resume at the World Cup stadium where a man fell 115 feet to his death while working on a roofing structure in the Amazon city of Manaus. The judge who made the ruling said, however, that work on the roof could take place only during the day.

■ Barcelona said that Lionel Messi's recovery from a hamstring injury is on schedule, meaning he should be back on the field in January.
