Early Bowl Games to Watch

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 21 Desember 2013 | 15.03

Who says all the good bowl games are in January? Bowl season starts Saturday, and while the AdvoCare V100 Bowl on Dec. 31 may not have the cachet of the Rose Bowl, it will feature two of the best running backs in the nation. And that is just one of the intriguing matchups to watch before the end of 2013. This may be your last chance to see quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel and Jordan Lynch before they start playing on Sundays.

Las Vegas Bowl

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. Eastern, ABC

Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr led the Football Bowl Subdivision with 4,866 yards and 48 touchdown passes, but the Bulldogs narrowly missed out on a Bowl Championship Series game. Southern California, which rebounded after Lane Kiffin was fired, is being led by its third coach of the season (the offensive coordinator Clay Helton).

Poinsettia Bowl

Thursday, 9:30 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

A surprising loss to Bowling Green in the Mid-American Conference championship game kept Northern Illinois out of a B.C.S. bowl, but quarterback Jordan Lynch is one of the most entertaining players in the country.

Fight Hunger Bowl

Friday, 9:30 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

Washington's Bishop Sankey had a huge season, rushing for 1,775 yards (third in the F.B.S.), while B.Y.U. boasts a pair of 1,200-yard runners, Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams. For the first time in an F.B.S. game, there will be two female officials.

Pinstripe Bowl

Dec. 28, noon Eastern, ESPN

The Fighting Irish (8-4) are heavy favorites over the Scarlet Knights (6-6).

Russell Athletic Bowl

Dec. 28, 6:45 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

Cardinals quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (28 touchdowns and 4 interceptions) was one of the most underrated players in the nation, probably because of Louisville's easy schedule. Miami is still struggling with the loss of running back Duke Johnson.

Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl

Dec. 28, 10:15 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

Kansas State was a Big 12 co-champion in 2012 but struggled early before winning five of six to finish this season. Michigan lost four of its final five but took Ohio State to the wire in its last game.

Alamo Bowl

Dec. 30, 6:45 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

This could be the most intriguing of the pre-Jan. 1 games. Oregon started the season with bigger aspirations than the Alamo Bowl. Texas is happy to be here and would love an emotional upset in Coach Mack Brown's final game.

Holiday Bowl

Dec. 30, 10:15 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

The Sun Devils are coming off a 10-win season that ended with a home loss in the Pacific-12 championship game to Stanford. Texas Tech started 7-0 before dropping its final five games.

AdvoCare V100 Bowl

Dec. 31, 12:30 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

With the matchup of Arizona's Ka'Deem Carey and Boston College's Andre Williams, this is the first time since the 1977 Rose Bowl that two first-team all-American running backs will face each other in a bowl game.

SUN BOWL

Dec. 31, 2 p.m. Eastern, CBS

Bruins linebacker Anthony Barr had 10 sacks this season and is likely to be a top pick in the coming draft. Myles Jack's two-way play at linebacker and running back for U.C.L.A. made him one of the most exciting freshmen in the nation.

Chick-fil-A Bowl

Dec. 31, 8 p.m. Eastern, ESPN

This could be Johnny Manziel's last college game. Manziel, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, had a great season, but he had his worst games down the stretch. Duke had one of its best seasons. This could be an entertaining and high-scoring affair.
