Jose Iglesias led this race, at least on the ballot, with more than 46 percent of the vote to 37 percent for Alex Rodriguez. But Rodriguez, in his second week back since off-season hip surgery and playing through the appeal process of his 211-game suspension, was the victor on the field. His performance for the week also helped ignite a stagnant offense, and the Yankees were the only one of the four teams mentioned in Question 1 with a winning record for the week.
Hiroki Kuroda was the logical choice here, and 41 percent of you agreed, having become the most reliable starter on a Yankees team that was beginning to show signs of Yankees teams of old. But a poor outing, at least by Kuroda's standards, in Boston on Saturday did not help him in this race. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies' Cole Hamels and the Chicago White Sox' Chris Sale both started the week strong, each throwing a complete game. Hamels struck out nine in a 5-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 12, and Sale struck out six that day in a 6-2 win over the Detroit Tigers, each on his way to outworking his Triple Play competition.
It seemed the Texas Rangers were due to cool off after winning 12 of their previous 13 games ahead of Aug. 12, and 51 percent of you felt that Oakland would find itself ahead of the Rangers atop the American League West at week's end. But neither team had a stretch worth bragging about, and the A's gained a just a half game during the week.
