Bats: Sabathia, After ‘Terrible’ First Half, Takes Time to Clear His Mind

BOSTON — After a disappointing final start before the All-Star break, C.C. Sabathia went into virtual seclusion. He took a large group of family members to St. Barthelemy in the Caribbean and for four days disassociated himself from baseball.

He said he wanted to relax on the beach with his extended family and clear his mind of anything to do with the game. So there were no reminders of his disappointing performances in the first half of the season, no recaps of the Yankees strange season, no All-Star Game, no television highlights, and no reports of the touching tribute to Mariano Rivera at the game or of Robinson Cano getting hit in the leg by a Matt Harvey pitch.

"I was in a nice little bubble," he said, "so it was good."

Sabathia, who will pitch here Sunday night, rejoined the Yankees on Thursday for their charter flight to Boston and got a debriefing from Charlie Wonsowicz, the team's head video coordinator. The one thing Sabathia was most concerned about, considering the amount of injuries the Yankees have piled up this season, was Cano's leg, which turned out to be fine.

"I was just hoping he didn't come in here on crutches," Sabathia said.

The last time Sabathia pitched was July 14, when he gave up eight runs (three earned) in four innings of a sloppy 10-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins. After that game Sabathia was highly critical of himself. And since he had not pitched since then, his estimation of his season so far did not change.

"Still terrible and disappointed," he said Saturday before the Yankees played the Red Sox.

Sunday night, Sabathia can begin the process of changing all that. With four therapeutic days to clear his mind and relax, he said he felt refreshed and ready to start pitching more the way he feels he is capable. He will bring a 9-8 record and a 4.07 earned run average into the game.

There is a mechanical problem — his arm is too low on his delivery — and he hopes that by correcting it he will have better command of his pitches, and more success.

But after his first 20 starts, even though there were some good ones sprinkled in, he is unsatisfied with the way things have gone for him.
"I'm my own worst critique," he said, "so I hope to do better."
