Dwyane Wade plans to return to the Miami lineup Friday against Boston, after missing six straight games because of soreness in his right knee. Wade also expects to play Sunday against Chicago, barring any setbacks.
¶ Rutgers's top in-house lawyer, John Wolf, resigned after coming under criticism for approving a plan to suspend rather than fire the former coach Mike Rice when it surfaced that he threw basketballs at players and used gay slurs. The university hired a former state attorney general, John J. Farmer, to replace him.
¶ Steve Alford, the new U.C.L.A. basketball coach, apologized for the way he handled a sexual assault charge involving a player on his team in 2002 when he coached at Iowa. Alford said he "instinctively and mistakenly" came to the defense of Pierre Pierce before he knew all the facts.
