Sports Briefing | Golf: Top Seeds Keep Falling at Match Play Championship

On Friday, one day after Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods were eliminated, more top seeds lost at the Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz. The 2012 Masters champion, Bubba Watson, was the only player from the top 10 remaining.

Watson, the eighth seed, missed two short putts that would have won the match before he finally put away Jim Furyk in 22 holes. It was the first time since 1999 that only one top-10 seed remained after two rounds.

"This game, it's a tossup," Watson said. "You can't really judge who's going to win, or bet who's going to win."

Scott Piercy hammered No. 3 Luke Donald, Robert Garrigus beat No. 4 Louis Oosthuizen, and fifth-seeded Justin Rose fell to Nicolas Colsaerts. Shane Lowry became the first No. 64 seed to make it to the third round after beating McIlroy and Carl Pettersson.

¶ Stacey Lewis shot a three-under-par 69 to keep her three-stroke lead after the second round of the L.P.G.A. Thailand in Chonburi.
