To the Sports Editor:
Re "Rape Case Unfolds on Web and Splits City," Dec. 17: The story of the Steubenville, Ohio, "football culture" was quite fully recounted. At a party at the home of a volunteer football coach, beer, vodka, rum and whiskey were freely available to all, many of whom were high school athletes.
Adults, particularly adults in an authority role, who look the other way or actually provide alcohol and a place for irresponsible behavior on the part of minors are responsible for the mayhem and should be held accountable in the news media as well as in the courts.Sandra Jacobson

Under-age drinking parties predictably lead to outcomes like this. Who are the adults who are buying alcohol for these high school students? And where is the local police department in enforcing the law? Shouldn't the adults who facilitated these parties be held accountable as well?

To the Sports Editor:
It is a terribly sad day when a sport takes precedence over humane behavior. These students are criminals, as are the adults who respond with such disrespect for human life.
What kind of person believes that the girl "put the football team in a bad light and put herself in a position to be violated."
It is unconscionable that anyone would treat another human being this way, be proud of such behavior, then post it online for anyone to see. I wonder how those football coaches would feel if their daughters were exposed in that way.Lorri Paulucci

Jets Failed Tebow
To the Sports Editor:
Re "Ryan's Cold Shoulder Leaves Tebow Baffled," Dec. 20: Tim Tebow never asked for anything but a chance to play football. He knows his limitations. He has always tried to put those deficiencies behind him and play the game he loves.
In hindsight, it is clear now that Tebow's role was to generate buzz. The Wildcat offense was just a facade to hide the true intent of selling Tebow for publicity.
The facts can't be disputed: 8 attempts, 39 yards.
The potential excitement, debate and intrigue that could have been part of the 2012 N.F.L. season was wasted by a clueless, inept, dysfunctional organization.
What a shame that a talent-deficient Jets organization wasn't creative enough to use his abilities.

Misery, Meet Company
To the Sports Editor:
Re "Unable to Lock Up Dickey, Mets Capitalize on Value," Dec. 18: I have been a Mets fan since Day 1. R. A. Dickey is my all-time favorite Met.
They say that misery loves company. Now I have a lot of company.
