The Red Sox have hired John Farrell as their new manager, according to a report on the team's Web site late Saturday.

Farrell, 50, spent the past two seasons as the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, one of Boston's American League East rivals, but he is familiar to Boston's players and fans, having served as the pitching coach for the former manager Terry Francona from 2007-10.

Farrell was 154-170 in two seasons with Toronto. MLB.com reported that the Red Sox would send infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto as compensation for hiring Farrell.

He replaces Bobby Valentine, who was fired one day after Boston (69-93) completed a disastrous first season with him in charge. The Red Sox had attempted to hire Farrell last year after Francona was fired, but the talks quickly broke down over the Blue Jays' compensation demands.
